Southern Michigan Obedience Training Club
SMOTC has been teaching puppy classes for over ten years. These classes encourage socialization of the puppies, but include grooming, behavior tips, and lots of fun.
Now we are pleased to offer the new AKC STAR Puppy certification.
STAR stands for Socialization, Training, Activity, and Responsibility. The program is based upon the highly successful AKC Canine Good Citizen Program, but is geared especially towards puppies.
All puppies from 12-20 weeks of age, purebred or mixed breed, are welcome to enroll in the
STAR Puppy Preschool Classes.

SMOTC offers this foundation obedience class for all dogs who are at least 6 months old. Learn how to train your dog to heel (walk) on leash with you, sit, stand, down, stay, and come when called. The class is designed to help you teach your dog how to become a more enjoyable member of the family, as well as to encourage participation in Obedience competition.
You will be given instructions necessary for the class. Ask if you should bring your dog on the first night. The trainers will need to see the dog's shot records. One shot is for rabies. Another is called DHLP. This shot is for distemper, hepatitis, parvo, and leptospirosis.
This class is taught at most of our locations.
S.T.A.R. PUPPY Preschool Class
This class offers a transition from the Puppy Preschool and our Introduction to Dog Obedience classes. This a great class for those dogs who need a extra time before entering the Introduction to Dog Obedience class.
Introduction to Dog Obedience
Advanced Rally and Novice Obedience
This "next step up" class focuses on sharper obedience work with an eye toward AKC Obedience competition in the Rally and Novice Rings. Off leash heeling is introduced, and fine-tuning other exercises such as the Competition Recall, Figure 8, Group Exercises, and Rally signage and performance are emphasized.
These are excellent preparatory classes if you are considering competition in the AKC Obedience and/or Rally ring. First-time competitors as well as seasoned showmen are welcome to attend in preparation for earning AKC titles.
AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC)
This fast paced class is designed to help handlers and dogs master the skills necessary to earn the AKC Canine Good Citizen award. The class is open to all dogs (including mixed breeds) who are at least 12 months old. It is recommended that dogs have previous exposure to classroom obedience training prior to enrolling. Students may participate in an AKC CGC Evaluation on the last night of class; dogs who successfully meet evaluation criteria are eligible to receive the distinctive Canine Good Citizen Award from the American Kennel Club.
